The Republic of England began in 1650.King Charles is now dead
and the people of England have no king. It is now a Republic.
King Charles son should have been the next King but the
Rump Parliament voted to take away the monarchy and

anyone who disagreed.
Restoration and Glorious Revolution
In 1653 Oliver Cromwell became "Ruler" of England.
Parliament was not doing a very good job so Oliver Cromwell became
known as Lord Protector. He was called this because he took over
parliament. Cromwell divided the country into districts, having
a major general for each district to kept order and collect taxes.
Oliver made the Calvinist Blue Laws. The Calvinist Blue Laws were made to
take away pagan ceremonies such as Gambling, Dancing, Theatre, Christmas,
and Sports! He soon realized he had become the ruler he was trying to stop
England from having.
The Restoration of Charles II took place from 1660-1685. Charles II took the throne
and got rid of the Blue laws. The people were very happy. He accepted that the
monarchy had limited power but he secretly wanted to gain back his fathers
amount power. The test act was in place allowing only members of the Church of
England to hold a political office. King Charles II dies and his brother James
II becomes the King.
James II became King in 1685. King James II is a strong catholic
and he gave officials titles to Catholics. The people of England
were not ready to have a Catholic King.
Finally the Glorious Revolution in 1688! King James II wanted to turn England into a
Catholic country, practice the Divine Rights of kings, and take power away from
the government. Soon people started to argue and there was no support for James
II. Parliament leaders were questioning James’ leadership to England in the
future. James’protestant Daughter Mary and her husband William of Orange were
invited to become King and Queen of England by the parliament. They agreed to
become King and Queen. James and his supporters fled out of the country in fear.
Once James left permanently he had given up his throne. This is the first time
that Parliament chose the monarchy instead of family or royal assent.
