James I - 1603
James I was a strong Catholic and is the father of Charles I. The Stuart
family disliked the Democratic traditions of England. James I
introduce the Divine Rights of Kings (the King and orders were
sent by God.) He went against parliament, disliked Puritans,
and died in 1625. When he died many people were not satisfied.

Duke of Buckingham - 1603
He was the Advisor for both James I and Charles I. The parliament charged him with
treason because he was responsible of putting England in war with Spain. The
King supported him and he was not charged. Later on he was in charge a campaign
to France and the English army was defeated. Duke of Buckingham was assassinated
in the end.

Lord Strafford - 1628
After the Duke of Buckingham was assassinated Lord Strafford was hired to bring
England into royal control.
He would "Feed off the country" meaning that the
taxes would provide items for the King.

Archbishop Laud - 1628
After the Duke of Buckingham was assassinated Archbishop Laud was hired
along with Lord Strafford to bring England into royal control. Archbishop Laud
insisted that there should be more rituals, luxuries, and decoration in the
church.

Cromwell was the leader of the New Model Army. Parliament was not doing a very
good job so Oliver Cromwell became known as Lord Protector. He was called this
because he took over parliament. Cromwell divided the country into districts,
having a major general for each district to kept order and collect taxes.
Oliver made the Calvinist Blue Laws. The Calvinist Blue Laws were made to take
away pagan ceremonies such as Gambling, Dancing, Theatre, Christmas, and
Sports! He soon realized he had become the ruler he was trying to stop England from having.

Charles II – 1660-1685
Charles II took the throne and got rid of the Blue laws. The people were very
happy. He accepted that the monarchy had limited power but he secretly wanted
to gain back his fathers amount power. The test act was in place allowing only
members of the Church of England to hold a political office. King Charles II
dies and his brother James II becomes the King.

Mary and William of Orange - 1688
James’ protestant Daughter Mary and her husband William of Orange were invited to
become King and Queen of England by the parliament. They agreed to become King
and Queen. James and his supporters fled out of the country in fear. Once James II
left permanently he had given up his throne. This is the first time that
Parliament chose the monarchy instead of family or royal assent.
